Principal’s Report

Read Time: ( words)

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

As we reach the end of Term 3, reflect on the significant learning experiences that are available for students at our college.

There has been lots occurring in the teaching and learning, some outstanding performances and achievements, and plenty of work happening behind the scenes as we prepare for 2027.

Most importantly, I continue to be proud of the way our students get involved, have a go and represent our college.

Strengthening Teaching and Learning

This year we launched our Instructional Model, which provides a consistent approach to teaching and learning across the College. The purpose is simple, to support teachers in their classroom practice and, ultimately, improve outcomes for our students.

Developing consistency in the classroom is important. We want our students to experience high-quality teaching regardless of the classroom they are in, while still allowing teachers to bring their own knowledge, experience and personality to their practice.

I would like to thank Ms Kylie Hanna for her leadership of this work, along with Mr Ivan Britto and Ms Michelle Lau and the Practice Excellence Team for the work they have done throughout the year.

Our 5 R’s framework, developed by our House Teams and led by Mr Max Eldridge, is another important piece of work. The framework will be introduced across our classrooms from the beginning of next year and will provide a consistent approach to classroom expectations and student management.

The aim is about creating classrooms where students understand the expectations, relationships are positive and learning remains the priority. This work supports the Berry Street Education Model that has been adopted by the school. Creating a positive classroom climate with regular routines that has been led by Ms Andrea Bellgrove and Ms Sally Walsh.

Student Wellbeing

Last week we celebrated R U OK? Day, and our Wellbeing Team put together a fantastic day for our students.

From breakfast in the courtyard, a range of exhibitors and activities, to the petting zoo at lunchtime, there was plenty happening. More importantly, it provided an opportunity to stop, connect with others and think about our own wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us.

Thank you to Ms Debbie Edwards and the Wellbeing Team for the considerable work that went into making the day such a success.

Celebrating Student Talent

Our students have also continued to make us proud through the performing arts.

The recent 4C’s performance was a fantastic showcase of the creativity and talent of our students. They performed with confidence and enthusiasm, and it was wonderful to see them take to the stage and enjoy the experience.

Thank you to Ms Kelly Krieg, Ms Sally Carruthers and the Performing Arts Team for the time and commitment they give to our students.

Our recent Multicultural Evening Performance was another wonderful evening. It was great to see our students sharing their talents and celebrating the diverse cultures that make up our College community.

Thank you to all of our students who performed and to the Performing Arts Team for supporting them.

Model United Nations

Recently, two HPSC teams participated in the Model United Nations, representing Cuba and Spain.

The students spent six weeks researching their countries, preparing position statements, drafting amendments and developing their speeches and debate points. They did an outstanding job. Cuba held their own against the USA, while Spain successfully had two amendments passed. Well done to Jing Yi Chua, Rheya Goetjens, Diana Nanthalak, Nayab Nawrozi, Zahra Nazari, Samera Nazari, Shalom Peti and Neelab Rezae.

Lady Casey Mural

I was particularly proud of three of our Year 11 students last week.

Maddie Gittens, Mariah Gittens and Keira Dekrell were part of a panel with local government, WHISE and GenVic to launch and discuss the first ever student-led commemorative justice initiative in Australia.

Their work focused on recognising an overlooked woman of Casey — Lady Casey — and has culminated in a mural that can now be seen at 112 High Street, Berwick.

What impressed me most was not simply the finished mural, but the confidence, commitment and maturity the girls demonstrated throughout the project. They were outstanding representatives of Hampton Park Secondary College, and I congratulate Maddie, Mariah and Keira on what they have achieved.

Write a Book in a Day

Last week, two teams of students from our college took on the Write a Book in a Day challenge, raising money to support children with cancer. They wrote two books, in eight hours. That is quite an achievement. Thank you to Mr Antill and Ms Dixit, along with Ms Gabi Pelan, Ms Anna Mendoza, Ms Crystal Corocher and Mrs Emelia Eldridge, for supporting and supervising the students throughout the day.

Well done to Elizabeth Beck, Jordan Chilcott, Sharmaine Dumasig, Caitlin Irving Nguyen, Asma Muniree, Truc Nguyen, Kat Podsytnik, Pari Roshan, Ricky Siv, Leanna Wilkinson and their fellow team members.

Staffing for 2027

Our recruitment for 2027 is well underway. With growing enrolments, six staff taking family leave and two staff retiring, we have been particularly busy advertising positions and recruiting new staff. I am very conscious that the people we appoint are important. We want staff who are committed to our students, believe in what we are trying to achieve and contribute positively to the culture of Hampton Park Secondary College.

Courtyard Development

The Courtyard Development is continuing to progress, albeit more slowly than we would have liked. We are currently at the tender stage. I know there is considerable interest in this project, and we will provide further information as we move through the next stages.

Looking Towards Term 4

Term 4 is always an important term.

For our Year 12 students, it is the final part of their secondary schooling. We will celebrate their time at HPSC through the Year 12 Final Assembly before they move into the VCE examination period and the next stage of their lives.

For our younger students, it is also a time to begin preparing for the year ahead, including through our Commencement Program, which begins on Monday 23rd November.

It is an important time for students to reflect on where they have been, consider where they want to go and take responsibility for their next steps.

Important Dates

Please keep the following dates in mind:

  • Friday 18 September – Last day of Term 3. Students dismissed at 2.30pm.
  • Monday 5 October – Term 4 commences at 9.00am.
  • Year 12 Final Assembly – Further details to follow.
  • VCE Exams commence – Please refer to the VCAA timetable.
  • Monday 2 November – Professional Practice Day for teachers. Student Free Day.
  • Tuesday 3 November – Melbourne Cup Public Holiday.
  • Friday 20 November – Curriculum Day. Student Free Day.

To our students, thank you for the way you continue to represent HPSC. Whether it is performing on stage, debating at Model UN, writing a book, contributing to a community project, succeeding in the classroom or simply making the most of the opportunities provided to you, these are the experiences that help make your time at secondary school meaningful.

And to our families, thank you for your ongoing support of the College and your children.

I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned break. Take the opportunity to slow down, spend some time with family and friends and recharge.

We have plenty to look forward to in Term 4.

House News

As Term 3 draws to a close, Hollows House remains firmly in contention to take out the 2026 House Cup. Early next term, we will discover whether our collective hard work has paid off and whether Hollows will claim the House Cup for the first time!

Throughout the year, we have continued to perform strongly across all areas that contribute to House points, including attendance, learning habits and participation in College events. Our second-place finish at this term’s Athletics Carnival was another fantastic achievement. Although we have dropped slightly in the overall standings, we remain consistently near the top. I encourage every Hollows student to keep striving to achieve their best and looking for ways to improve.

Our recent Student-Led Conferences provided students with an important opportunity to receive feedback from their teachers and identify areas to work on before the end of the year. The final term will pass quickly, so make sure you return ready to give it your all, make positive choices and finish the year strongly.

There is plenty to look forward to in Term 4. Early in the term, our Year 7 students will attend their Big Day Out excursion at LeMans Entertainment. We will also farewell our Year 12 students during their special whole-school assembly and celebrate their contribution to our College community.

The Arts and STEM Exhibition will take place in Week 2, providing students with a wonderful opportunity to showcase their creativity, skills and talents. Day 2 of the Year 9 City Experience will also take place next term, so Year 9 students should ensure that consent has been provided and that they understand what the day will involve.

Thank you to all Hollows students and staff for your efforts throughout Term 3. Have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break. We look forward to returning refreshed and ready to hit the ground running, both in our learning and in our pursuit of the 2026 House Cup.

MABO HOUSE – 2026 ATHLETICS DAY WINNERS

Mabo spirit. Mabo pride. Mabo champions!

Celebrating Learning and Academic Growth

Term 3 has been another busy and exciting term for Mabo House, with students embracing a wide range of opportunities to develop their learning, creativity, cultural understanding and connections across our school community.

Students participated in ACER Testing, providing an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge across a range of learning areas. These assessments help students and teachers identify strengths and areas for further growth, supporting students to continue working towards their individual learning goals.

Our themed learning weeks also provided exciting opportunities to engage with learning beyond the traditional classroom.

Arts and STEM Week encouraged students to explore creativity, innovation, problem-solving and design, highlighting the connections between the arts, science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Humanities Week provided opportunities for students to explore history, geography, society and culture through engaging activities and experiences.

Students also participated in Science Week, celebrating scientific discovery, curiosity and the important role science plays in understanding and shaping our world.

Celebrating Creativity – Replay Rewind

One of the major highlights of the term was our school production, Replay Rewind.

Our students demonstrated incredible talent, creativity, dedication and teamwork throughout the production. From performing on stage to working behind the scenes, students played an important role in creating an entertaining and memorable experience for our school community.

Congratulations to all of our Mabo students who were involved in making Replay Rewind such a success!

Celebrating Language, Culture and Community

Term 3 has provided many opportunities to celebrate the incredible diversity of our school community.

Language Week celebrated the many languages spoken across our school, encouraging students to recognise the importance of language, communication and cultural identity.

We also proudly recognised National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, providing an opportunity to celebrate the culture, achievements and strengths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.

These celebrations help strengthen our understanding and appreciation of the diverse cultures, experiences and perspectives that make our school community so special.

Year 7 Swimming Program

Our Year 7 students embraced their Swimming Program, developing swimming skills, confidence, water safety knowledge and independence.

The program provided students with valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom while encouraging them to challenge themselves, build confidence and support one another.

Planning for the Future

Term 3 has also been an important time for students to begin planning for the future.

Course Counselling for 2027 provided students with the opportunity to consider their interests, strengths, pathways and future goals when making decisions about their subjects and learning programs for next year.

These conversations are an important part of helping students take ownership of their learning and begin building a pathway towards their future aspirations.

Looking Ahead

What an incredible term for Mabo House!

From winning Athletics Day, to performing in Replay Rewind, developing new skills through the Year 7 Swimming Program, celebrating culture and language, engaging in STEM and Science activities, and planning for future pathways, our students have continued to embrace opportunities to learn, connect and grow.

Most importantly, our Athletics Day victory demonstrated the incredible House spirit that exists within Mabo.

Congratulations, Mabo! You are officially the 2026 Athletics Day Champions!

Thank you to all of our students, staff and families for your continued support and contribution to such a positive, inclusive and successful House community.

Bringing Explicit Teaching to Life

Our Priority Practices in Action

Across Term 3, staff at Hampton Park Secondary College have been putting our Priority Practices into action every day in the classroom. From breaking learning into small, manageable steps to making thinking visible through modelling and think-alouds, teachers and support staff have generously shared how these strategies are lifting student confidence and understanding. Below, hear and see directly from the staff and students living out these practices this term.

“During a Year 8 Science lesson on the digestive system, I watched the teacher chunk the learning into smaller sections. A student remained engaged throughout and confidently demonstrated their understanding through a digestive system flowchart.”

– Maxie, Learning Support Officer

“I understood Legal Studies much better when my teacher used modelling and think-alouds. Instead of just giving us the answer, she worked through a question step by step and explained her thinking as she went. Seeing the process first made me feel more confident completing questions independently, and I could use the same strategies in my own work.”

– Azala Tata, Year 12 Student

Looking Ahead: The Practise Phase

As we move forward, our focus shifts to the ‘Practise’ phase of our Instructional Model. Thi

s is where students build confidence by practising new skills with support and scaffolds, which are gradually reduced as they become more independent. Through multiple exposures and scaffolding, students will have regular, low-stakes opportunities to practise and apply their learning.

Keep an eye out in our next edition as we showcase how staff are bringing the Practise phase to life across our classrooms.

Hand On Learning Program

As we come to the end of our second term running Hands on Learning, it is exciting to reflect on how far our program has come. We have been hearing some wonderful feedback from both staff and students about how much they are enjoying HoL and, even more importantly, how the impact of the program is being seen beyond the HoL Precinct and into students’ regular classrooms. This is something we are incredibly proud of and a great reminder of why Hands on Learning is so valuable for our young people.

This term looked a little different for us, with our HoL Coordinator, Dan, taking some well-deserved time away to spend with his wife as they welcomed their first baby — a very exciting time for their family! In Dan’s absence, Robson stepped in to help support the running of HoL, ensuring the program could continue to power on. And power on we did! Over the past few weeks, students have created outdoor storage crates and shelving for our timber, as well as begun building our HoL garden with some beautiful wicking beds that we are incredibly proud of. These projects have provided great opportunities to refine our hands-on skills through measuring, sawing, drilling, hammering and screwing, while also building teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. We are looking forward to a well-deserved break and then getting stuck back into HoL next term, with some big and exciting projects planned!

Extra-Curricular Activities – Cultural Events

Celebrating Our Term 3 Multicultural Events

Term 3 provided our college community with many wonderful opportunities to come together, learn from one another and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes our school such a vibrant and inclusive place. We are incredibly proud of the many students who enthusiastically participated in our multicultural events throughout the term, demonstrating courage, leadership, creativity and a genuine commitment to fostering understanding and belonging.

A highlight of the term was our Multicultural Evening Showcase, which brought together students, families, staff and community members for an unforgettable evening of cultural celebration. The event showcased the many backgrounds, traditions and stories that make up our college community through a range of performances, displays, traditional attire, music, and dance.

Students who participated in the showcase should be commended for the pride and confidence with which they shared their cultures and experiences. Whether performing on stage, assisting behind the scenes, helping with cultural displays or welcoming guests, every student contribution played an important role in creating a warm and inclusive atmosphere. The evening was not only a celebration of diversity but also a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from embracing and valuing different perspectives, traditions and identities.

Throughout the term, students also engaged in activities through the 4C’s Program. These initiatives encouraged meaningful conversations, cultural learning and opportunities for students to connect with peers from a wide range of backgrounds.

The success of these events was made possible by students who stepped outside their comfort zones to teach others their traditional dance. Their willingness to participate helped create opportunities for learning, respect and appreciation among their peers. By taking part, students not only celebrated their own cultural identities but also helped foster a school environment where everyone feels seen, valued and respected.

These experiences reflect our commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive community where diversity is celebrated as one of our greatest strengths. The enthusiasm shown by students throughout the term demonstrated how cultural understanding can build connections, break down barriers and create a stronger sense of belonging for all.

We extend our sincere congratulations and gratitude to every student who participated in the Multicultural Evening Showcase and the 4C’s rehearsals and showcase throughout Term 3. Your contributions enriched our college community and helped make these events both meaningful and memorable.

We also thank the staff, families and community members who supported these initiatives and helped ensure their success. Together, we continue to build a school culture that celebrates diversity, embraces inclusion and values the unique experiences and perspectives that each member brings to our community.

Congratulations to all students involved. Your enthusiasm, leadership and pride in sharing your culture have made a lasting impact and have helped make Term 3 a truly inspiring celebration of culture, community, connection and belonging.

Over the holidays – the team at SMLS might still be available for support – get in contact with them through the details on their website, to see if they can arrange an in-person, or phone appointment with you: https://www.smls.com.au/

HPSC also has close connections to local youth support organisations – including the City of Casey Youth Services, which run free and low-cost activities over the School Holidays! Register by clicking the links in the flyers – and book your spot quickly before they run out! https://www.casey.vic.gov.au/teen-holiday-program

They also run a free Counselling service for Young People aged 12-25, to help provide Mental Health support in the community. They can provide in-person appointments at their 3 Youth Centres, online support, or appointments over-the-phone. Referrals are easy, and wait times are quite quick. Check out the website and flyer below for more info! https://www.casey.vic.gov.au/get-counselling-support

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
We’ll see you back in 2 weeks for the final sprint, Term 4!

Health Space News

The HP nurses were able to run to Health Pop-ups this term.

The first focused on healthy eating and the importance of sleep and the second was run in conjunction with Women’s Health Week.

There were lots of options to learn – quizzes, games, simulations, healthy snacks and prizes for the students who came. Many students engaged with the presenters and the topics offered.

Term 4 we will be offering another Pop-up looking at being sun and swim smart and party-wise.
