Principal’s Report

Read Time: ( words)

Dear Families,

As we approach the conclusion of another busy and rewarding year at Hampton Park Secondary College, there is much to celebrate and reflect upon. The final weeks of the school year are always an important time as we acknowledge student achievements, celebrate milestones and look ahead to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Over recent weeks, we have enjoyed a number of wonderful occasions celebrating our Year 12 students and recognising the completion of their secondary schooling.

Our Year 12 Final Assembly provided an opportunity for the college community to come together and acknowledge the contributions, achievements and growth of our graduating students. This was followed by Year 12 Celebration Day, where students enjoyed a well-earned opportunity to celebrate their friendships and the many memories created throughout their time at HPSC. A highlight was their excursion to Gumbuya World, which provided plenty of fun, laughter and opportunities to celebrate together.

Our Year 12 Valedictory Evening at Alencia was a particularly special occasion. It was wonderful to see students, families and staff come together to reflect on the journey our graduates have shared and to recognise their individual achievements. We congratulate our Year 12 students and wish them every success as they take their next steps, whether that be university, TAFE, an apprenticeship, traineeship or employment. We encourage them to carry our college values of Respect, Learning and Working Together into the next chapter of their lives.

Final VCE examinations have now commenced, with our students demonstrating a mature, focused and committed approach. We wish all of our Year 12 students well as they complete their examinations and look forward to celebrating their results and future pathways.

Remembrance Day– on 11th November students and staff will stop to commemorate Remembrance Day and to honour those who served and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Some of our student leaders will assist with the local Remembrance Day Service in Hampton Park.  I wish to thank Ms Gabi Phelan and our student leaders for supporting this important community engagement.

Commencement Program

Following the completion of the Year 12 examinations, our Year 10 and 11 students will undertake their examination program. Immediately following this, our 2027 Commencement Program begins on Monday 23 November. This important program provides students with a focused and purposeful finish to the school year while offering them the opportunity to experience their new classes, meet their teachers and begin preparing for the learning expectations and opportunities of 2027. We encourage all students to approach this program positively and make the most of the opportunity to get a head start on their learning.

A reminder to families of two important dates as we move towards the end of the school year.

Wednesday 18 November – 40th Anniversary Celebration and Year 7 Information Evening

As part of our 40th Anniversary celebrations, we are delighted to welcome back former students and staff to Hampton Park Secondary College. This will be a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, share memories and celebrate four decades of our college’s history. We are particularly excited to welcome members of our foundation years and those who have helped shape the college into the community it is today.

On the same evening, we will also welcome our incoming Year 7 students for 2027 and their families. We look forward to introducing our newest members of the HPSC community and helping them feel confident and excited about beginning their secondary school journey with us.

Curriculum Day

Please note that Friday 20 November is our final Curriculum Day for the year. Students are not required to attend school on this day. Our teachers will be working collaboratively to finalise learning tasks, curriculum planning and class materials in preparation for the 2027 learning program.

This week, our teams from our Soccer Academy headed off to participate in the National Futsal Competition on the Gold Coast. We wish them every success in the tournament throughout the week.

Finishing the Year Positively

As always, our focus remains on ensuring that every student finishes the year positively, with a sense of achievement and confidence in their learning. Our values of Respect, Learning and Working Together continue to guide the way we approach our work and the relationships we build across the college.

Thank you to our staff for their continued dedication, professionalism and commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for our students. To our families, thank you for your ongoing support and partnership throughout the year.

House News

This year has been another busy and rewarding one for Freeman House at Hampton Park Secondary College. While Freeman finished 4th in the House Cup, there is still plenty to celebrate, particularly the enthusiasm and commitment our students have shown throughout the year. The House Cup recognises student attendance, school values, participation in events and learning habits, and each of these areas provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our achievements and consider how we can continue to improve.

One of the standout areas for Freeman this year was participation in school events. Whether competing in inter-house sports, taking part in academic competitions, showcasing talents in the arts or getting involved in other school activities, Freeman students demonstrated enthusiasm, pride and a willingness to get involved.

Although we may not have achieved the House Cup result we hoped for, our goal is to build on the positive spirit already shown and approach the new year with determination, pride and a commitment to improvement.

As we move further into term 4, students will soon have the opportunity to begin their 2027 subjects through the Commencement Program. During this two-week period, students will attend classes for their upcoming year level, giving them a valuable head start on the learning ahead. Attendance throughout Commencement is essential, as the learning covered during these sessions will form the foundation for subjects when classes officially begin in 2027.

The program is also an opportunity to build relationships with new teachers and classmates, become familiar with subject expectations and develop positive learning routines before the new school year begins. It allows students to approach their next stage of learning with greater confidence and a clearer understanding of what lies ahead.

We encourage all students to make the most of this opportunity by setting high expectations, approaching new challenges with an open mind and actively engaging in their learning. Whether exploring an unfamiliar subject or extending knowledge in a favourite area, students should ask questions, contribute to class discussions and give every task their best effort.

Commencement is an important opportunity to start fresh, establish positive habits and take responsibility for future success. Let’s finish the year positively and begin preparing for a successful 2027!

Finishing Strong and Preparing for 2027

We hope all our Hollows families enjoyed the extended weekend over the Melbourne Cup public holiday. As we reach the halfway point of the term, we are drawing closer to the end of the 2026 academic year and preparing for our 2027 step-up program, with commencement only two weeks away.

With assessments being finalised, students must remain focused on finishing strongly in every subject. Our recently released Learning Habits Reports provide an important opportunity to reflect on progress, celebrate strengths and identify areas for improvement. Making adjustments now, whether through better preparation, greater effort or more consistent engagement, can make a real difference before the year ends.

Our narrow runner-up finish in the House Cup was certainly disappointing, particularly after coming so close once again. However, I could not be prouder of the effort and contributions of our Hollows students throughout the year. Congratulations to Mabo, whose strong participation in extracurricular activities helped give them the winning advantage.

The results also highlighted opportunities for Hollows to improve. Our attendance average declined in the second half of the year, and our Learning Habits Report average dropped. These are areas where every student can contribute: attend regularly, arrive prepared with the correct materials, work hard in every class and treat others respectfully. When an absence is unavoidable, families should contact Miss Jo promptly to explain the reason and provide medical certificates where appropriate. Accurate attendance records help us support students and keep their learning on track.

We also encourage everyone to get involved in the opportunities available beyond the classroom. Joining an activity, representing the House or participating in a College event strengthens our community and helps every student feel connected. Every contribution matters.

Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in behavioural issues in the yard. We need all students to take responsibility for their choices and demonstrate our College values of Respect, Learning and Working Together. As the weather warms up, please bring a water bottle, wear the appropriate school uniform and remove jumpers when needed to stay comfortable. Water fights and disruptive behaviour can affect the safety and enjoyment of others and have no place in our school day.

Year 12 exams have commenced, and we wish our students every success as they complete this important stage of their schooling. Year 10 and Year 11 exams are also approaching. Now is the time to establish consistent revision routines, seek feedback and ask teachers for support.

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who recently completed work experience. This is a valuable opportunity to explore the world of work and develop a clearer understanding of possible pathways. For some students, the experience will have confirmed a career interest. Others may have discovered that a particular job is different from what they expected and would prefer to explore another direction. Both outcomes are valuable and help students make more informed decisions about their futures.

We also look forward to our Hollows House Celebratory Lunch on Thursday of Week 7. This lunch will recognise individual students who have demonstrated excellence throughout the year through high attendance, strong values nominations, learning growth and consistently positive learning habits. Congratulations in advance to the students who will be recognised; we look forward to celebrating your achievements.

Hollows, there is still plenty to achieve this year. Let’s take pride in our House, support one another and finish 2026 with the effort, respect and commitment that will prepare us for a successful 2027.

Hollows House Assistant principal

House News

Term 4 has already been a busy and exciting time for Mabo students, with plenty of opportunities to get involved, celebrate achievements and make some great memories together.

Year 7 Big Day Out

Our Year 7 students had the opportunity to take part in the Year 7 Big Day Out, heading to Le Mans Go Karting for a day of racing, fun and friendly competition. Students also enjoyed arcade games, making it a fantastic day to celebrate their first year at HPSC and spend time with their classmates outside the classroom.

Celebrating Our Year 12s

Term 4 is always a significant time for our Year 12 students. To celebrate the end of their official classes, our Year 12s headed off on their Mystery Excursion. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to relax, celebrate and reflect on their time at HPSC.

We also held our Year 12 Final Assembly, providing the school community with an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our graduating students and wish them all the very best as they head into their final exams and their next steps beyond HPSC. We are incredibly proud of everything our Year 12 students have achieved and look forward to seeing where their future takes them!

Preparing for the Future

Our Year 10 students have also been busy gaining valuable experience through Work Experience. This is an important opportunity for students to explore different careers, develop workplace skills and begin thinking about their pathways beyond secondary school.

Our Year 9 students have enjoyed their second City Experience for the year. This time, students had the choice of visiting the Eureka Skydeck or Melbourne Aquarium, giving them another opportunity to explore Melbourne, learn outside the classroom and experience some of the amazing attractions our city has to offer.

Sport and Academies

Mabo students have continued to represent HPSC with pride through our sporting programs and academies. Students competed at Regional Athletics, showcasing their determination and commitment while representing our school.

HPSC also hosted the HPSC Touch Gala Day, bringing students together through sport, teamwork and friendly competition. It was fantastic to see our students getting involved, supporting one another and demonstrating our school values.

Arts, STEM and Open Night

Our Open Night was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the incredible work happening across HPSC. From Arts to STEM and everything in between, students had the chance to demonstrate their creativity, knowledge and skills to families and the wider community. It was wonderful to see so many Mabo students involved and proudly showcasing their learning.

Mabo House

We are excited to introduce a new Mabo Art Wall, giving our creative students a space to showcase their artwork.

If you have created a piece of art that you would like to display, bring it to Ms Beattie. We would love to see the creativity and talent within Mabo and give students the opportunity to have their work celebrated by our House community.

Mabo has also introduced a new Culture of the Month initiative. Each month, we will celebrate and learn more about the diverse cultures that make up our Mabo community.

Students are invited to create a celebration poster about their culture to help us share and celebrate the traditions, stories, languages, food, celebrations and important aspects of their culture.

If you would like to create a poster, speak to Ms Beattie to find out more.

It has already been a fantastic start to Term 4, and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the term brings for Mabo!

ARTS/STEM Showcase Evening – A Huge Success!

Our ARTS/STEM Showcase Evening on Thursday 15 October was a fantastic success, bringing together students, families, staff and visitors from local primary schools and the wider community to celebrate the creativity, talent and achievements of our students.

Visitors enjoyed an impressive exhibition of student work from across the Arts and STEM subjects, along with demonstrations of 3D printing and our VEX Robotics Team in action. Our talented Music students entertained everyone with live performances, while our Food Studies students provided delicious homemade cookies. The BBQ was a popular stop for a sausage, with refreshments available from our wonderful student-led HP Delights Café.

The Power of Purposeful Practice

Building Confidence Through Repeated Practice

This term, our focus moves to the ‘Practise’ phase of the HPSC Instructional Model. Students strengthen their learning through purposeful opportunities to revisit, apply and refine new knowledge and skills. Our Priority Practices are Multiple Exposures, Scaffolding, Collaboration and Check Student Understanding.

Turning Practice into Progress

Practise is more than repeating the same task. Teachers provide varied opportunities for students to build fluency, use support when needed, learn with peers and demonstrate what they understand. Feedback and checks for understanding help teachers respond to students’ needs and build confidence towards greater independence.

Our Priority Practices explained:

Multiple ExposuresStudents revisit and apply learning in different ways over time. This strengthens understanding, builds fluency and supports long-term retention.
ScaffoldingTeachers break learning into manageable steps, model processes and provide prompts or examples. Support is gradually reduced as students gain confidence and independence.
CollaborationStudents work together to discuss ideas, explain their thinking and solve problems. Structured opportunities to practice together help develop skills and deepen understanding.
Check Student UnderstandingTeachers regularly check student learning through questioning, qui

ck responses and feedback. These checks help identify misconceptions, monitor progress and guide next steps.

Practise in Action: Staff Voices

Our teachers create purposeful opportunities for students to practise, receive feedback and grow in confidence.

“This term, we’re moving into the Practise phase of our Instructional Model. It’s where students get to have a go, build confidence, make mistakes and keep improving. Effective practice isn’t just about doing more, it’s about practising with purpose. Our Year 7 Humanities class has been practising including evidence in their writing. In this ‘Practise’ task, they were analysing their live model of the water cycle as a source of evidence. It was exciting to see precipitation happen right before our eyes.”

— Kylie Hanna (Humanities Teacher)

“The Practise phase gives students time to revisit learning, apply new skills, receive feedback and build confidence. Try. Feedback. Improve. Repeat. That’s how learning sticks at HPSC.”

— Iden Cooper (H/PE Teacher)

Our Instructional Model continues to shape the way we teach and learn, ensuring every student benefits from a consistent, engaging and high-quality learning experience.

HPSC Instructional Model

This term in Hands on Learning, students have been getting creative with some exciting new projects to support our school gardens. We have designed and built our own birdhouses and bird feeders and have also begun work on a big bug hotel! These projects are all about encouraging the helpful bugs and wildlife that will support the growth and health of our gardens. Along the way, students have continued to develop their practical skills, problem-solving and teamwork while taking pride in creating something meaningful. These projects are just a few small steps towards supporting the fantastic work happening in the Empower Girls Garden, and we look forward to working together on some bigger collaborative projects in the future.

Beyond our projects, we have also been enjoying some delicious lunches together, with plenty of yummy, healthy wraps making an appearance as the weather warms up. Lunchtime has also been a great opportunity to play games, share plenty of interesting conversations and continue building positive relationships within our groups. These everyday moments are an important part of what makes HoL special, helping us strengthen connections and create a place where everyone feels they belong.
